About Me

Anne O’Kane

Registered Psychotherapist – member of PBANZ and APANZ
Registered Imago Couple Therapist
Accredited EMDR Therapist
ACC Sensitive Claims Registered Provider

Anne O'Kane
I have worked with people throughout my adult life. Initially I was a Registered Nurse, followed by social work with children and young people. In my late thirties I retrained in psychotherapy and have worked in this field ever since.
Much of my work has had a trauma focus which led me to further study and understand somatic presentations of mind, body and emotional wellbeing. “The body holds the score’’ concept underpins my holistic interventions with individuals today. I hold psychodynamic understandings of an individual’s presentation and utilise this understanding in working with clients in an informed manner.
I strongly believe talk therapy is beneficial in improving wellbeing, with the unconscious wanting to move towards health and wholeness. To help facilitate this move towards health I have found EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming) to be a very powerful modality which helps to ‘unlock’ unintegrated memories and past experiences which may be keeping people locked in unhelpful patterns and psychological distress.

I work with couples to help enhance relational satisfaction through Imago Therapy principals. Again I experience this way of working to be insightful and transformational.

About Me

Sophia O’Kane

As a counselling therapist I have extensive training and experience working alongside people seeking relief from feelings of anxiety and depression, seeking a sense of identity, self-acceptance, and inner-strength.
Sophia O'Kane
Utilising neuro-linguistic programming, mindfulness, motivational medicine and multiple brain integration informed by a psychodynamic understanding in my practice; taking a view of the whole person, your history, presenting issues, social interactions, spiritual views, familial experiences, physical capabilities and more to help guide a therapeutic process of transformation. I view the therapeutic relationship as a sacred one where all of you is welcomed, my integrative and holistic approach recognises that no one way of being, or healing modality suits all people. Instead recognising and honouring each individual, affirming your inherent wholeness, uniqueness, strengths, resources and capacity for growth and healing.
I draw upon diverse theoretical understandings and models of working, as well as wide life experience in my practice. Along with my experience and trainings in mindfulness, Polyvagal theory, NLP and more, I have a background in psychology, mental health and primary school teaching, and hold postgraduate diplomas in teaching and psychotherapy. I am currently completing my thesis for my Masters of Counselling and working toward full registration with NZAC in order to work with others on their individual and collective journeys to wellbeing.

I am also O’Kane Counselling and Psychotherapy Service’s practice coordinator. In this role I liaise with practitioners, ACC, manage client enquiries, organise supervision, invoicing and more.

About Me

Robyn Agnew

I trained as a social worker in the 1980s and have worked all my life as a therapist dealing with trauma.
Robyn Agnew

Firstly in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and then within Oranga Tamariki (CYF) as a Therapist, then Manager of child assessment and therapy services (Specialist Services). During this period of work, I was ACC registered providing therapy services to child clients.

I then provided national policy and support to social workers within CYF implementing and running a Critical Incident Stress Management Service. This service triaged social workers following work related incidents causing harm. It comprised a team of up to 60 trained senior social work staff who would provide support to a site experiencing work related incidents. I also trained a staff of up to 200 peers to provide day to day on site support for affected staff.

Following this period of work, I took a sabbatical in the UK working for the first time as a child protection social worker in the Scottish Highlands.

Coming back to NZ I worked in the Starship and then began working for HELP (sexual abuse therapy) supporting families managing sexually abused children.

I now work solely in private practice, doing a lot of Sensitive Claim ACC work for clients with historical sexual trauma. I enjoy helping with relational difficulties either family or work related.

My ACC clients have learned to be silent contenders with their own abuse experience, most never sharing or disclosing their abuse.

Therapy assists with clients understanding what has happened to the spirit within after damage has occurred. The role of the therapist provides a sensitive mind to assist the feeling states of clients to come to terms with their own experience and become liberated into their true selves, not stuck in their trauma self.

The ‘originating’ family psychodynamics have often operated to suppress all child resistance to oppression and encouraged self-internalised denigration and punishment which controls the child’s own spirit.

In survival mode the child makes the best decisions to survive and in therapy the adult child needs to review the family patterning; the decisions the child made and if they are relevant now.

I feel joy with the adult child’s connection with this powerful new energy that allows the adult to be themself.

This is the joy of therapy. Seeing a client’s increasing independence and the liberation of experiencing their true self.

Christine Cowan-James bio
I am a New Zealand registered psychologist practicing under the Counselling scope. Counselling psychologists use scientific knowledge about human behaviour to empower clients to make changes that enhance their well-being and take a holistic approach to living life well.

Since my initial registration I have undertaken further training in the area of brain-based therapy – which is an approach that uses the most up to date findings from the field of neuroscience and applies them to therapy. My clients have found this to be a helpful way of understanding what needs to happen to shift patterns of behaviour that are not working for them.

I work with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, and debilitating stress. I provide support for addiction recovery, and assist with trauma processing and healing – including ACC sensitive claims.

I have experience working with adolescents and young people who are struggling with these transition years, and adults who are facing major life changes and challenges. I am a certified resilience coach – resilience building is an approach that develops skills to maximise the ability to bounce back from adverse experiences.

I use a multi-modal approach to therapy that is based on collaboration with my clients to develop therapy goals. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR and Mindfulness are some of the frameworks I am trained to use. I see therapy as teamwork and there is regular evaluation of progress and approach to ensure the right fit for each individual client.

About Me

Trish Cassidy

Registered Psychotherapist, Full Member of the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists Aotearoa New Zealand. (APANZ).
Trisha Cassidy
I am a registered psychotherapist who has been working for over 25 years in the field. The main focus of my work is psychodynamic psychotherapy, working in a relational way to bring relief from symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, grief and loss, anger, and general relationship difficulties. I specialise in recovery from trauma, including sexual abuse trauma, and have been ACC registered for around 20 years.
A central focus of much of my work is to explore early life experiences and re-examine the relationship between the past and the present, in order to increase self awareness, recover feelings, and help overcome stressful past experiences. This helps us towards living in the present with greater fulfillment and wellbeing.
